About the project:

Map, Mind, Memory

If this book of mine fails to take a straight course, it is because
I am lost in a strange region, - I have no map!
Graham Greene, The End of the Affair

How do we find our way in the unknown? How do we remember the absent and forget the present? Why and how has the human “territory of knowledge” expanded in some directions and not in others?

Philosophers became geographers through exploring and mapping the frontiers between separate worlds: the sensible world of things and the intelligible world of meaning, the imaginary heavenly world above and the real terrestrial world below, presence and absence.
In today’s societies in which the cultural core consists of  things that are constantly on the move, where motion itself has become the core, old geographical scales and cartographic techniques that impose spatial order on the world could become more and more obsolet.
In this digital era, with global, mechanized mapping and image-taking systems constantly running, the massive virtual archives that accumulate can exceed the reality of the actual landscape.

The group-show "Map, Mind, Memory" circulates around these topics.
By illuminating the connections between spatial order, everyday perception and personal experience the participating artists create new imaginative and unexpected panoramas of the world around us. The works presented in Munichs’ Galerie der Künstler both critique and embody the way personal maps and mapping through tools and technologies shape our awareness of the world. The theme unfolds through texts, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, installations, videos and performances.

”Map, Mind, Memory" is a collaboration between German, Swedish, Finnish and Portuguese artists.
