About:

Miia Rinne (b. 1973) lives and works in Helsinki. She has MA degrees from the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. She works with a variety of media including film, video, installation, and prints. Whereas her video works are often like sceneries from inner road movies, they include the concept of the entire universe where everything is on the move.

Miia Rinne likes to work with open-ended projects. She mixes older and more recent material with each other and makes something new out of them.

ONGOING PROJECT: PAINTINGS ON 35 MM FILM (2008 - )

Hand painted 35 films transferred to HD.

*****

Seven years ago I made a painting on a 100 meter long piece of clear 35 mm film. I named the painting Pori-Helsinki. It shows colours and shapes that create an illusion (or free interpretation) of passing sceneries - like seen from the window of a train. The film ends in the sunset by the sea.

In a sense, Pori–Helsinki is a mixture of concrete and psychological travel. Pori refers to the town where I was born and lived the first twenty years of my life. Helsinki refers to the city I moved from Pori and have been living ever since.

The sounds are made by saxophonist Tapani Rinne and electronic musician Verneri Lumi. The work consists of views and sounds familiar from my early life.

*****

Since Pori–Helsinki was not painted with long-lasting colours, I made a negative copy of it in order to preserve the work. But as I got the negative and looked through it, something changed in my mind. Instead of archiving the negative I wanted to paint a new layer on top of it. The result turned out as a night-time companion to the first film.

*****

So, instead of conserving the film in an archive, I painted a new work upon the 35 mm negative made of Pori-Helsinki. The result is dark scenes that resemble a sea view at night.

The working title of this new layer of the film was Helsinki-Stockholm as it was premiered at the same time in those two cities across the sea. Later I changed the name to Sea. Sea refers to the psychological notion of ”oceanic feeling”, understood as a kind of existential mood that involves dissolution of the psychological and sensory boundaries of the self. In “oceanic feeling”, the pre-intentional bodily feeling structures one’s fundamental relations with oneself, others, and the world.

Pentti Dassum has made the sounds. The soundtrack is a mixture of organic and electronic sounds.

*****

After Sea I painted a new work upon the two earlier works – to the positive made of Sea. This third film is named Attraction. It deals with the idea that through the ages, human being has been impressed with nature and tried to copy its spirit. The title Attraction refers also to the early film term “cinema of attractions”.

Emma Augustsson, Anton Svanberg and Jesper Eriksson have made the sounds.

*****

The fourth film is in process at the moment. It will be again painted on the negative, this time made of Attraction. In this new work I will continue the morphing technique I used in the very end of Attraction. So this fourth film will go through digital processing more than the earlier ones.

The basic dramaturgy in the series is that days and nights follow each other.

*****

So in this series, each new work is painted as a new layer upon earlier works. Like episodes in human life, old works trail off when new ones emerge on the surface. This method of using the old as background for the new makes the resulting chain resemble the human psychic system as it builds up over time. In a psychic system, events of bygone episodes remain effective in the tacit substructures of one's personal history, through which each experienced present moment passes. Likewise, the old images on my film have not passed away entirely. They get restored underneath the film's visible layers and generate a reservoir of hidden images. The film has on onion-like structure of memory. Sigmund Freud had something similar in mind when he likened the Eternal City, Rome, with all its historical and archeological layers, to the psychic system of a human being where nothing that has once come into existence will have passed away.
